Vietnamese Phin Coffee Recipe

Phin Coffee is more than just a brewing method; it has long been an inseparable part of Vietnamese culture. Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, the Vietnamese Phin remains a symbol of peace. At MissTrang, we cherish every drop of coffee as a way to preserve its true essence. Each drop of coffee has the rich flavour, subtle bitterness, and intense aroma of carefully selected robusta coffee beans from the Central Highlands, helping you start your day full of energy.

Everyone has different preferences regarding strength, so you can adjust it to suit your taste. The recipe below is designed to preserve the authentic flavor of Vietnamese Robusta coffee, ensuring you enjoy a perfect cup of coffee every morning.

What you need: MissTrang’s Vietnam Robusta Signature Coffee Beans (Medium Roasted) - 100% Pure High Quality Vietnamese Robusta Whole Beans.

Ratio: 1:4 (25g coffee grounds, Vietnam robusta signature: 100ml hot water 95-98°C).

Grinding size: Medium fine.

Tool: Small Phin 25g, gooseneck kettle, scale.

1. Rinse the phin filter with hot water to clean and preheat it.

2. Add 25g of ground coffee into the Phin. Gently tap and shake to level the grounds.

3. Bottom Bloom: Pour about 10ml of hot water into the Phin cap and place the Phin on top.

4. Top Bloom: Pour another 20ml of hot water directly over the coffee grounds in a slow spiral motion. Let the coffee bloom for 30 to 45 seconds.

5. After 30-45 seconds, insert the press filler and press down lightly. Place the Phin in a glass cup.

6. First Pour: Pour the 10 ml of water used for the bottom bloom back into the Phin chamber.

7. Second Pour: Add about 20 ml of hot water in a spiral motion and allow the coffee to drip for about 2 minutes.

8. Final Pour: Add the remaining 50ml of hot water (totaling 100ml), using the same spiral technique as the first pour.

9. The total extraction time for both pours should be around 6–7 minutes, yielding 45ml of coffee.

Result: A cup with an intense aroma, highlighting notes of dark chocolate, nuts, and caramel sweetness, with a body.

MissTrang stands out for advanced processing for nuance (de-stoning, color-sorting) that creates a remarkably smooth flavour without harsh bitterness. While more expensive, it offers the cleanest, most original and refined robusta experience for those wanting Vietnamese authenticity without the typical mass-produced robusta harsh notes.
